Sharpe was incredibly proud of Aidan for all the work he’d done. And although he could tell the pumpkin launcher had come as somewhat of a surprise to Emma, she’d been a good sport about it and had launched a few pumpkins of her own.

But now the sun was starting to set, and Frost was back with the hayrack, having already taken everyone else besides the few of them at the launcher to the site of the bonfire. Sharpe was really looking forward to this evening. He always enjoyed sharing bonfire evenings with his family, and tonight was extra special since Emma and Aidan were there with him.

With what he now knew about Emma and Aidan’s background, it was important for him to share what it felt like to participate in a close family activity. He hoped they would leave Whispering Pines with permanent, heartfelt memories of their time here, even if the thought of them leaving squeezed at his heart.

By the time they arrived at the bonfire, someone had already lit the fire, and the flames were roaring two feet high in the pit, which was surrounded by large logs to sit on or lean against.

Emma breathed in audibly. “This is absolutely stunning,” she murmured.

“I’m glad you think so,” Sharpe responded, his chest warming at the expression on her face. “Have you ever had hot dogs cooked over an open flame?”

“Can’t say that I have.”

“You’re in for a real treat,” he assured her. “And s’mores?”

“Some more what? Hot dogs?”

He threw back his head and laughed. She was too cute for words, especially when her brow was knit with confusion.

Sharpe settled her not far from the roaring fire on a soft bed of pine needles with her back to a log and wrapped her in a green plaid woolen blanket, then called Aidan to his side. The boy bounded over with Baloo at his heel.

“Grab one of those branches that have the point carved on one end,” he instructed Aidan. “See how they’re green inside? Frost cut them from a spot nearby the creek bed. Because they’re still fresh and green, they won’t burn when we cook with them.”

He showed Aidan how to thread a hot dog onto the stick and hold it over the open flame, enjoying the look of pure joy emanating from the boy’s face as he cooked his own dinner. He’d come a long way from the kid who, when they’d first met, only wanted to keep his nose in his phone all the time and spent all his free time playing video games. Now he was enjoying everything the outdoors had to offer. He’d excelled at horsemanship with Diamond, and his pumpkin launcher was brilliant.

Sharpe hoped he wasn’t doing Emma a disservice by mentoring Aidan in all ways mountain and farm living. That wasn’t his intention, by any means. But he wanted to show Aidan some happiness while he was here in Whispering Pines, and he’d really bonded with the young man—probably more so than he should have.
